PFTs | Haematological, Liver, Renal, Thyroid Test

VARIOUS TYPES OF TESTS

PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST (PFTs)

These are non invasive tests that show how well the lungs are working. The tests measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow and gas exchange. This information can help your health care provider diagnosis and decide the treatment of certain lung disorders.

PFT can done with 2 methods -

  • Spirometry

  • Plethysmography

PFT Measures : Tidal volume (TV)

  • Minute volume (MV)

  • Vital Capacity (VC)

  • Functional Residual Capacity (FRC)

  • Residual volume

  • Total lung capacity

  • Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)

  • Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV)

  • Forced Expiratory Flow (FEF)

  • Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR)

HAEMATOLOGICAL TESTS

Fall blood count

WBC Total Count

RBC Total Count

Estimation of Hemoglobin

Hematocrit (ratio of plasma to RBC)

Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Cholesterol testing

Blood Glucose

Arranging a Blood Test

LIVER FUNCTION TEST

Liver function tests (also known as liver panel) are blood tests that measure different enzymes, proteins and other substances made by the liver. These tests check the overall health of your liver. The different substances are often tested at the same time on a single blood sample and may include the following -

  • Albumin, a protein made in the liver

  • Total protein, this test measures the total amount of protein in the blood

  • ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine transaminase) and gamma - glutamyl transferase (GGT). These are different enzymes made by the liver

  • Bilirubin, a waste product made by the liver

  • Lactate dehydrogenase (LD) an enzyme found in most of the body's cells

  • LD is released into the blood when cells have been damaged by disease or injury

  • Prothrombin time (PT) a protein involved in blood clotting

RENAL FUNCTION TEST

Estimation of Glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

Urine analysis : Screens the presence of protein and blood in urine.

Serum Creatinine Test :

Creatinine level higher than 1.2 mg/dl for women 1.4 ml/dl for men is sign of a kidney problem.

Blood Urea Nitrogen : (BUN), this test checks for waste products in your blood.

BUN test measures the amount of nitrogen in the blood.

Urine Concentration Test : Your kidney's response to -

  • Too much fluid intake (water loading)

  • Too little fluid intake (dehydration)

  • A hormone that should concentrate your urine, antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

THYROID FUNCTION TEST

TSH level blood -

T4

Free T3

Reverse T3

Thyroglobulin

Non- blood test : Radio active iodine uptake. Estrogen and Biotin can affect thyroid function testing.

TESTS ASSOCIATED WITH CARDIAC DISORDERS

ECG

Exercise Stress Test

Echo cardiogram (ultra sound)

Coronary angiogram

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Coronary computed tomography angiogram (CCTA)

FLUID AND ELECTROLYTE BALANCE TEST

An electrolyte panel, also known as serum electrolyte test is a blood test that measures levels of the body's main electrolytes : sodium, which helps control the amount of fluid in the body.
